Cecilio CVA-600 Handmade Premium Flamed Viola Outfit - 16 Inches Review

Cecilio CVA-600 Handmade Premium Flamed Viola Outfit - 16 Inches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
1. the bridge is not horrible but its still bad. It screams machine made. the bridge was cut too low for the A string, and wasn't curved enough for the G/C, not giving you enough space for bowing btwn them. i suggest you take this instrument to a violin maker and fork over the $200 to fit a REAL bridge.
2. the strings are cheap and bad. upgrade them.
3. the soundpost was off. when you get a new bridge tell the violin maker to take a look at the sound post and see if there is anything he can do.
4. cheap case.
in all, this is a good starter but be prepared to spend at least an extra $300 to get it up to standards.

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi up to 16.5" Viola String Set - Medium Gauge Review

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi up to 16.5 Viola String Set - Medium Gauge
Average Reviews:

Unlike the Evah Pirazzi violin strings, the windings are even and don't interfere with insertion into the tailpiece. The strings produce a warm yet clear tone that performs well both in small ensembles and in orchestra use. The break-in period is reasonable and the strings remain stable much longer than Obbligato. I find them excellent overall for full-time professional use.

Cecilio CVA-400 Handmade Rosewood Fitted Viola Outfit - 16 Inches Review

Cecilio CVA-400 Handmade Rosewood Fitted Viola Outfit - 16 Inches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This viola is decent for an orchestra student. The strings and bridge are not very durable/strong, after a tuning one bridge cracked, and after a few months of use one string is starting to "peel" The bow itself had many loose hairs (when tightened) when it arrived, and weekly, some strings start to easily fall out. Another con is that the bridge is not cut, so you'll need to send it into a string shop to do so for around $30-$40. Overall it does produce a nice sound and is good for maybe a High School string student.

Shifting: Thirty Studies for Young Violinists by Yaakov Geringas Review

Shifting: Thirty Studies for Young Violinists by Yaakov Geringas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Traditional shifting methods offer 3rd position in about the 3rd year of playing, which is studied for at least 6 months before going on to 5th position. In traditional shifting on violin it takes several years to learn positions 2-6. And then, all the time you're saying, "What position am I in?" You're thinking in terms of the physical distances on the fingerboard first, the sounds of the intervals come second.
Yaakov Geringas writes in his intro that as soon as a student knows various finger patterns, he/she should be introduced into shifting. In fact, he asserts, the higher positions are much easier for little fingers because the notes are closer together and more comfortable for littler arms.
I decided to give him a whirl a couple of years ago. Much of his technique involves hearing the intervals, as the positions are all mixed up. I have used video, recording, and just plain demonstration in teaching this book; he also requires playing in first position first, to hear the piece and facilitate finding the note with your shift. He doesn't identify positions - instead, the player shifts from one note to another note, learning to hear the notes as he or she reads.
As a result, after a few months the student is ready to read almost any music and even design fingerings of their own that ensure smooth string crossings.
The little pieces Geringas wrote for this book are delightful, reflect several different moods, and always pull the student in. They're perfect for adult beginners too, as they offer faster learning skills to pull the adult learner closer to his or her goal in learning violin.
The reason I gave the book 4 instead of 5 stars, is because it's not self teaching, and probably isn't for everyone. It requires the ability to hear the intervals, and I have had a small number of students who were not able to do it. Also it seems to be a stand alone book in a completely diverse method - so I find that I am really scouring the literature to find something to teach when this book is finished.
I'm really so happy I bumped into this book though. It's kickstarted many students into learning to use the entire fingerboard of the violin.
(One further note: I researched Yaakov Geringas and found that he was a professor of violin in a university in Canada during the 1960's. Therefore, I'm not really sure he intended this book to be just for little kids. I wish I could find more about him.)

Shifting: Thirty Studies for Young Violinists by Yaakov Geringas is the essential technical study album which introduces shifting gradually and easily, early in a young player's development. Students overcome the problems of string crossing and shifting to produce a smoother sound and greater variety of tonal shading. Exercises are included to help students prepare for the progressively leveled studies. Descriptive titles such as Up and Down the Ladder and Hide and Seek, combined with imaginative drawings, make technique fun for the young student.

I bought this Viola for my daughter but am very sorry I did. She was able to tell the difference in the sound immediately and she doesnt like the bow at all. She loved playing the viola while using the rented one from school but since she turned in the schools and got this one she's only played it maybe twice. I would not recommend anyone buying this.

I don't know anything about violas, but my son wanted on to tinker with and learn how to play. This is a beautiful viola. It came well packaged and undamaged. If you are unfamiliar with violas, you have to be prepared to pay about $30 to have the bridge and post installed by a music shop, unless you know how to do it. We had to pay extra because the post was too long.

Super-Sensitive Sensicore Bass Viola de Gamba Strings, Set Review

Super-Sensitive Sensicore Bass Viola de Gamba Strings, Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With all due respect to the other review, I had a very different and far more positive experience with these strings. I have two custom Gambas, built in 1971 & 1972, as well as a 5-string fidel built in 1993. I put Pirastros on the Gambas when I first got them, and the strings started to unravel within 3 weeks and several broke within a month. Shortly thereafter, I put Sensicores on, and have NEVER needed to change them to this day! Not one broke or unraveled. On the fidel, one broke at the nut, but there was a small edge, that, once filed, has not sacrificed any strings at all, and they have been played at many concerts, including the White House in 1977. Several possible factors: My gambas are a tad smaller than full-size, measured from a Division Viol, so the tension is less. In addition, after my initial gut-wrenching expenses(Sorry!), I got light rather than medium-gauge strings. They give a great sustain, a very quick response, and at nearly 40 years of age, are easy on the pocket. It's been said by some others that these strings are badly made, but I have had some serious Viol-players from England and America try the gambas and they all felt the sensitivity and response were astounding. Go figure!

Jargar 4/4 Violin E String Thick(Forte) Chromesteel Ball-End Review

Jargar 4/4 Violin E String Thick(Forte) Chromesteel Ball-End
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of my favorite e strings, although lately it is erratically available. It combines well with many different string combinations for the G, D, and A. Many people recommend it to top off Dominants, making the entire violin sound fundamentally more ringing and brilliant. I have used it with Visions, Infeld Blues, as well as Dominants, and find that it just feels more responsive and open than the native e strings of those sets. It gives my violin a more open and ringing sound, and it lasts a long time, more than a year, where I feel I'm just changing it out because of time, and felt not much difference between a new string and the old one. It never squeaks ever!
It has a nice clear sound all the way up the fingerboard, is great for doublestops involving both the open e and the fingered e string. I think it's the string for you to play Vivaldi's Winter.

Corelli Alliance Vivace 4/4 Violin String Set Medium with ball E Review

Corelli Alliance Vivace 4/4 Violin String Set Medium with ball E
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I upgraded from the Corelli Crystal strings to these strings and they are the best strings I've played so far on my violin. The tone is excellent and the projection is awesome. I recently played an outdoor wedding, unaccompanied, and was told the sound resonated well to the back of the crowd and even around the neighborhood. I'm not 100% sold on the steel E string which is why I gave only 4 stars (I'd give 4.5 if they'd let me). The E is nice, but is a bit "tinny" (not surprising since it's plain steel) which has taken me a little while to get used to. The longer I play with it the better it gets, but I may end up experimenting a bit more to find my perfect E string. I'd definitely recommend these strings for solo performers, though every instrument is different and you may need to experiment with strings before finding the perfect fit for your instrument and playing style. Overall I'd say these strings are absolutely awesome for the price, though they are the most expensive strings I've tried so far and can't comment as to how they compare to a more expensive string.
