(More customer reviews)This is one of my favorite e strings, although lately it is erratically available. It combines well with many different string combinations for the G, D, and A. Many people recommend it to top off Dominants, making the entire violin sound fundamentally more ringing and brilliant. I have used it with Visions, Infeld Blues, as well as Dominants, and find that it just feels more responsive and open than the native e strings of those sets. It gives my violin a more open and ringing sound, and it lasts a long time, more than a year, where I feel I'm just changing it out because of time, and felt not much difference between a new string and the old one. It never squeaks ever!
It has a nice clear sound all the way up the fingerboard, is great for doublestops involving both the open e and the fingered e string. I think it's the string for you to play Vivaldi's Winter.

I bought these because they were positively reviewed against a few popular, much higher priced strings. I cannot confirm these reviews, however, these strings are much more powerful and responsive than others in this price range.

D'Addario Zyex 4/4 Violin Set Medium Gauge Review

(More customer reviews)I recently changed all my violin strings to Zyex, and I can say nothing but good things about them. They set quickly, and have a rich, slightly dark sound. They are loud and have very quick bow response.
The only possible negative thing I can say about these strings is that they take slightly more pressure to play in 3rd or 4th position, but as I have only been playing the violin for four years, it could be that there is some mistake in my technique.
I am a classical player, but I would recommend these strings for any type of music.

(More customer reviews)In contrast to the previous review that stated that these strings deteriorate rapidly, I have found that this is not the case. I use them on both a fine violin and viola for constant professional use and have not exerienced any early deterioration. They certainly don't last as long as Dominant strings, but provide significantly more complex and beautiful overall sound. I also have found that they last much longer than Obligato strings before going false. The breakin period is short and the previous reviewer may have confused a loss of brilliance early on for the sound of the strings settling in and balancing out. I do find that the Gold E is far better than the standard one that is added to sets. Also, consider different gauges.

(More customer reviews)The Dominant strings sets the standard for synthetic violin strings, being one of the first to be marketed. It works well on many different types of violins since it is pretty decent, predictable and gives a middle of the road tone. When it is new, there is a slight metallic feel, but that goes away after it is stretched out. Some people like the metallic feel and insist on new Dominants. They do take a few days to settle in though and last about 2-3 months.
They feel supple under the finger and are not high tension strings. They start out on the bright side with good overtones but then they go dull. The E string is just ordinary, and many people substitute a different E string (such as Pirastro Gold). In fact Dominant sells sets with just the G, D, and A.

(More customer reviews)When my "A" string broke I decided I had enough with crappy strings (the violin was a gift so I have no idea what brand of strings was used before I took ownership of it) and decided to try this set. I have stretched them for days now as recommended and although it is a vast improvement from the last set I had, the Pirastro ended up being the star of the show. The other 3 strings (Dominants) sound a bit dull as opposed to bright and full of color like the "E" string. I'll see how it all plays out, no pun intended and will keep posting updates on this review. But as for now, I'm leaning towards getting the entire Pirastro set next time.

The E string is just ordinary, and many people substitute a different E string (such as Pirastro Gold). I like to substitute the Kaplan Solo E string or the Jargar Forte e.
