The functions are all very useful and the built in speaker is loud and very clear (volume adjustable). It has a better built in metronome than I've used on some stand alone metronome units. As for the pitch training function it was intended for, it has positives and negatives...
The pitch recognition and playback does actually work as described most of the time. However, you have to be very close to the pitch for it to play the correct pitch back, which is odd since you can see on screen that it definitely recognizes what note it hears you being closest to. So it doesn't help much more than a standard digital tuner if your intonation is significantly off (as mine sometimes is) and is best suited for fine tuning an already good sense of pitch/finger position. Another problem though is that, at least with the violin, it picks up a lot of overtones and sometimes treats those as the recognized pitch. So for instance you might be playing an open D but the tuner is playing back a high G or A to you. The speed of response in pitch recognition varies a lot. Occasionally it will respond wonderfully quick, giving you a note almost simultaneously with your attack...other times it seems to take a few seconds to respond. I'm not sure what factors are causing this for me, it could be other variables such as ambient noise, etc.
I give this 4 stars instead of 3 for the number of helpful functions this has in one unit. For the price it's actually very handy and a good value for beginner players.

Because of the size, I found it difficult to tune and keep in tune, but I had researched beforehand and knew this was an issue with a violin of this size. We wanted something affordable and this model was just a step up from the cheapest ones, so we weren't expecting the best quality instrument. After all, even if we had spent hundreds more, what can you reasonably expect from a 3-1/2-year old and his violin? This quality and priced violin made sense for our situation. So far, my son is thrilled to take out his violin and experiment with making sound. We haven't started him on any lessons just yet, but thus far, we are very pleased with our purchase. It came with a bow, rosin, bridge and zipper-type case. We followed youtube videos on getting set up, so it wasn't too complicated. I am hoping with proper care and instruction that the violin will last until he needs the next size.

(More customer reviews)We purchased this violin for our 3-year-old daughter. She is now 4. She is doing well with this violin. The stings were replaced with Thomastik Dominant Violin Strings. This improved the sound quality nicely. Very pleased with the violin and would suggest this violin, yet the strings that come with the violin are not the best quality. Yet, lets be realistic. There is [almost] no violin in this price range, and this size that will come with anything but the least expensive strings. A little up grade on the strings and you will have a violin that you will be pleased with. The structure and construction of the violin is completed well. The finish is fine. The pegs, fingerboard, body, and wood quality are of good quality materials. The fine tuners work well. Very pleased for this price. Went to local brick and mortar music stores and they wanted about $500 - $600 for the same or similar instrument. I would suggest this violin and give it a positive review.

(More customer reviews)This review is for the full size 4/4 Palatino NV-450. I'm addressing some unfair negative reviews posted regarding the smaller size (1/4) of this same instrument.
Ok the first negative review is by someone who admits to not even having touched one himself. The second, I think isin't being fair.
Look, this is a beginners instrument. I bought this with 0 hours of experience playing the violin (at age 26 by the way). I bought this and started lessions with a highly reputed teacher located in the area of Berklee College of Music in Boston. The teacher had nothing but positive comments about the instrument.
It's solid spruce and maple and the pegs, fingerboard and chinrest are solid ebony. That's essentially what teachers are looking for in a student instrument. No violin "holds it's tune". That's why there's tuning pegs and fine tuners (this instrument has 4 fine tuners by the way really helping the student get accustomed to tuning). All good accoustic violins are made of wood and as such are subject to expansion and contraction in changing temperature and humidity conditions. When the wood contracts a bit, the pegs can become loose and require retuning, some peg drops can help reduce this but not eliminate it. The bridge is an average stock bridge. A student looking for an entry level instrument (like myself) hasn't often the money nor time to consult and hire a luthier to custom shave and fine tune thier bridge. I find the bridge that comes with this instrument, in it's stock condition carries the vibration from the strings to the body effectively and actually quite loud.
I will agree however that the bow it comes with has warped slightly and I'm looking for a replacement now. But heck, after two years with this instrument and a couple of sets of replacement strings, I'm more than happy with it's performance.
It's not a $10,000 violin, and doesn't claim to be. It's an entry level student voilin that I only spent about $150 on a couple years ago and have progressed quite a long way on.

Cremona SV-150 Premier Student Violin, 1/4-Size Review

(More customer reviews)Bought this directly from Amazon (who has the best price for 1/4 size), was expecting it not set up. seemed decently packed, but one of the screw tuners had fallen out, found it in case and rescrewed it in. It is very easy to install the bridge yourself (youtube videos). Violin seems of very decent quality, good finishings, nothing looking rough, unfinished, or crude. Bow works well. It comes with a beautiful case with built-in hygrometer. I am waiting to see how the pegs and strings settle in and hold tune.
I was considering buying a used instrument of higher quality from ebay or locally, but now that I have this I think this was the right choice. My six-year old who is very serious about starting violin will be so excited to have this bright shiny instrument with very nice finishings. Because it is widely marketed with a known retail price, it will be much easier to sell for about 1/2 price when my child outgrows it. No-name violin will have no value at all in the used market. Even the initial trial rental from a music store, which is usually heavily discounted, will not be as cheap.

Cremona SV-130 Premier Novice Violin, 1/4-Size Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this violin for my daughter's first violin experience and I didn't want to spent a lot of money because I did not know yet whether or not she would take to the instrument...
It was a very solid choice! It's made well and seems to hold up to the careful treatment of an 8 year old :) I think the sound quality is slightly better than what you would expect for the price (I have been told that all 1/4 size violins have some issues with sound quality simply because of the small size). The bow is very do-able for a beginner instrument and has been very durable - it's putting up with my daughter's somewhat rough rosining technique quite well! The tuning pegs hold a tune well (after a couple of weeks) and the fine tuners work well too. Also, it's a very pretty instrument - a fact that's helping my daughter want to practice.
I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the case was for the price of this instrument. She can throw the violin in the back of the car with the schoolbooks and the groceries and we don't have to worry about it getting crushed.
Bottom line: our violin teacher was concerned when I said I bought a violin online through a seller that also sells everything else. In the end, she has been pleased with our purchase and so have we.

The instrument does not arrive "set up", but we were able to have a musician at a local music shop set it up for $10. Prices for this service may vary, so call for prices before you buy the violin if that additional cost is a concern for you. (Set up includes installing the bridge, which is not attached to the violin but is held in place by the strings; positioning the sound post, which is not attached but is inside the box and held in place by the top and bottom panels; rosining the bow, and tuning the violin.) In closing, may I just say that y'all don't know how difficult it was for me to call this a violin and not a fiddle.

(More customer reviews)I bought this violin to start my daughter on, and it's been perfectly serviceable. The natural wood and real horsehair bow were a pleasant surprise in an instrument with this price point, and the instrument itself exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. I grew up a violinist, so I knew I would not be getting the highest quality instrument for this price, but for a child just starting to play, you want an instrument that you won't have weep over if it does happen to get dropped facedown on the floor, or if your child decides to move on to piano or flute instead. This violin fit the bill. It is well-enough put together to learn on, stay in tune, and have passable tone. The only problem I had was that the mass-produced bridge had to be filed down by a luthier to fit the strings properly, but that cost me less than $20 and made all the difference. The case was of higher quality than I expected and my daughter loves the backpack straps. Good starter package.
