Behringer ADI21 V-Tone Acoustic Review

(More customer reviews)I have a couple of $100-plus guitar pre-amps I use when
playing my flamenco guitar through an amplifier. For
that use, they work fine.
For recording to a desktop recording software however
the sound from my pre-amps just wasn't very good. In
fact, it sucked. I use a pickup-the-world film transducer -
which is an uncommon pickup but it sounds EXACTLY like
the guitar, picking up string-squeak, body taps (golpes)
and syllabant sounds inherent to the nylon-string guitar
but lost when using piezo pickups.
If you want a sound exactly like a microphone, use a
mic - but if you want something close out of a pickup,
give this a try.
I'm overjoyed at how full, balanced and rounded this
little box sounds. It is way sturdier than I expected
for the price. The plastic casing is so hefty you'd
think it was die-cast metal if it were colder to the
touch.
This is a stomp box, and built accordingly. The stomp
button is sturdy and separated adequately from the
rest of the controls, which have a stiffness to them
that will help them retain their settings when you
take it places. The printing which identifies the
controls is in poor-contrast and I have to pick up
the box and hold it close to my face to read the
labels. A minor gripe.
The sound of this little dream box allows me to plug
my guitar into it, then into my Firewire box and
get a good, usable signal. I have no onboard pre-amp
like a Fishman, only a jack because I prefer the external
battery and pre-amp approach for my hand-made (by me)
guitars.
I have only used a flamenco guitar through this box
so I cannot say if it sounds good with a steel string
acoustic. For the price, the sound is amazing. It
makes the signal richer, fatter, and sounds a lot
like a mic'd guitar.

I have used 10 different pick-ups over the course of my upright career, and without a doubt this is the best, most uncomplicated and cleanest sounding pick-up I've ever used.
Set it and forget it. I use it with a Genz-Benz shuttle 6.0 and a Schroeder 12 inch cabinet. The sound from my upright is full and punchy without being harsh and trebly.
I've used it on Jazz, Rockabilly, Blues, and recording gigs (One Trouble After Another) (Nothin' But Trouble) and was very happy with the sound in each style of music.
I'm buying a second one for my other upright.

Fishman G-II Acoustic Instrument Preamp Review

(More customer reviews)The perfect location for the transducer of my instrument yields low volume. Therefore I need a preamp that will boost the signal to match the loudness of my other instruments. This preamp didn't make much difference even when the input pot (on the back of the unit) was all the way to the max. If the job of this device is to merely match impedance, then maybe it's doing its job. I don't know. But if the job of this device is to boost the signal of the transducer, then it should offer a max volume setting that is too loud and we could choose a setting in between that suits us best. But at best it gives a slightly noticeable increase in volume.
This is not a strong amplifier. It is merely a 2-band EQ with a slight loudness increase. It did not do the job for me, so I am giving it the minimum rating.

AKG C411/L Ultra-Light Condenser Microphone for Guitar, Violin, and Other Stringed Instruments Review

1-the flexibility to experiment with placement and tones on the soundboard and bridge.
2-sounds better than most pickups.
3-no need to drill holes in the guitar
4-low cost (also see CONS)
5-sound got even better when I combined the C411 signal with an Audio Technica AT831b clip-on mic pointed at the soundhole. This sound was almost as good as using my AKG C414 in the studio.
6-adhesive sticks really well and doesn't mark up or damage the wood
7-solid/loud output
8-can be used on multiple guitars
9-using two C411s at the same time (placed on different parts of the guitar)would probably sound even better
CONS:
1-doesn't sound better than a high-end condensor mic
2-cost of the mic is low but the AKG cable you need to use the mic cost more than mic.
3-attack is good for fingerstyle/classical/flamenco players but not ideal for really fast pickers (maybe a compressor would remedy this issue)
OVERALL:
worth the money and worth trying out as an alternative to other pickups/transducers for live sound.

Fishman V-200-M Professional Violin Pickup w/mini Mic Review

(More customer reviews)I received this product new with the mini Mic not soldered onto the 1/4" jack. The customer support from Fishman was so difficult to deal with regarding this problem I had to pay a Fishman 3rd party repair person to fix the problem.
That said, the contact mic is decent but the mini Mic is practically useless and picks up almost no sound. A good contact mic and good preamp work just as well. I've used this pickup for classical, jazz, and rock styles- the contact mic helps when playing with drums or other loud instruments, but a functioning mini Mic would have made this product good for solo work as well.

Pickup Transducer for Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar, Ukulele, Etc Review

(More customer reviews)I asked at a well known and respected guitar shop in the San Francisco area about installing a pickup in my Pono tenor ukulele which is very nice except that it projects sound back to the player poorly. The shop wanted to put in a similar style (stick on, unamplified piezo soundboard transducer) Fishman pickup for $175. That seemed unreasonable for a $300 instrument. So I found this pickup, read the one review, and figured I'd get it and try it out. Worst case if I didn't like it, I could just pull it out and have the Fishman installed and use this transducer on other instruments in emergencies. Well, it was easy to install and the ukulele sounds great when plugged into our Roland AC-90 acoustic amp. I don't feel like I'm missing anything except the brand name recognition. Try it. I bet you'll like it too.

I like it because it highlights the quality sound of my violin with no feedback. It is small and compact and folds away nicely in my violin case. It is way better than your run-of-the-mill pickup; for one thing it can't fall out of the bridge like most do occasionally, it doesn't mute the sound, and I never get any feedback. I originally intended to put this bridge on my nice violin (for classical) and have it be an all-purpose instrument; however, my luthier advised against this, saying the thicker bridge slightly changes the tone of your violin. I therefore opted to get a cheaper "show" violin to install it on to use with my band. Once electrified, you can't really tell the difference anyway. I use it with the L.R. Baggs Acoustic DI, and couldn't be happier!

(More customer reviews)I agree that attaching this type of pickup is awkward at best, but the quality of the sound is excellent for a pickup at this price (you really need a high quality microphone for true sound reproduction, which has its own issues). This price is very reasonable, but if you want to spend a little more Fishman also makes a model with a clamp-on 1/4" jack that I imagine is much easier to use.

Fishman Classic Series V-200 Professional Violin Pickup Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using this pickup with the Fishman G-II preamp for months and have little good to say about it. I simply cannot get the pickup to sound good on my instrument. In order to make it bearable I have to turn the treble nearly as low as possible, otherwise all that comes out is high pitched bow scraping noise. In addition, the carpenter jack is poorly designed and will not fit in my violin case. I have to attach and remove the pickup each time I use it. It The best thing about the pickup is that it is very easy to install. While it does the job of amplifying my violin, I cannot recommend this pickup for a violinist serious about tone. There simply must be better options out there.
