This product's purpose is to prevent feedback when used with an amplifier - it prevents the sound form the speakers from entering the guitar body, therefore reducing feedback. It is NOT intended to make the guitar "softer". When used for the intended purpose, it works well.

Glaesel GL-3812 3 Prong Violin Mute, Ebony Review

Glaesel GL-3812 3 Prong Violin Mute, Ebony
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Glaesel Ebony mute is pretty simply to install, but in time it will slip off little by little.. As for it's job, it does actually mute with a more bassy sound. The downside is that it will "hide" your mistakes made without the mute and the Ebony will stain the bridge black after a week or 2 of use. If you want to preserve your bridge then I suggest trying a different product.

The Original Bernardel Rosin Violin Viola NEW Review

The Original Bernardel Rosin Violin Viola NEW
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the last few years I've been using rosins such as Hidersine, Dominant, and the expensive Guillaume. But I had a nagging feeling I could still attain something better from my rosin. 6 months ago while I was looking for a new bow, I noted to myself mentally that the luthier used Bernardel rosin. So just last week I decided to order a cake of Bernardel. The results blew away my underwhelming conceptions of the impact of rosin!
I've had some difficulty with slow bowing near the bridge, for that really full sound. Honest as I can be, the second I put this stuff on, all scratching at the sound point nearest the bridge was completely eliminated, and my volume and fullness remarkably augmented.
I next attempted other types of bow strokes, and I became completely blown away by the compliance of this rosin. Literally new nuances have been added to my sound. The off-the string and bouncing strokes have acquired an unbelievable crispness of execution that I had honestly never even conceived. When I attempt ricochet across the four strings successively, the bow pops perfectly on each string, back and forth, with unbelievable articulation.
Employing this product has introduced me to the fact that your sound and your entire way of playing in regards to your right-hand can be revolutionized by a simple and small investment. I highly recommend Bernardel with my utmost confidence! Let me finally add that this rosin produces basically no dust with almost unnoticeable accretion of residue on the top plate and on the bow shaft.

My son's violin teacher seemed to have to remind my son to "fix" his bow grip throughout his lesson. I saw this product and it seemed like it would be worth a try. At today's lesson his teacher was so impressed that she is going to make it a requirement that all of her students get one.

The mute works well, but it fits over the bridge extremely tightly. I could barely get it on the first few times. It also left some black streaks upon removal. I recommend a rubber mute instead (or just play loudly and let the neighbors deal with it!).

The String Centre Bech Magnetic Mute (Violin/Viola) Review

The String Centre Bech Magnetic Mute (Violin/Viola)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to use cheap rubber mutes that rattled when not in use, so I would always take them off of my instrument and lose them. The Bech magnetic mute hasn't rattled, even during some of my most vigorous playing on the lower strings. Therefore, it's not coming off my instrument and I won't lose it. When it is in use, it makes a really nice tone. Get one and never be caught without your mute in rehearsal. It's well worth the money.

Super-Sensitive Spector Violin Mute, Copper Review

Super-Sensitive Spector Violin Mute, Copper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The reviewer S. Jacobs says that this mute did not have a big effect on his violin's volume. That's because this is a performance mute, designed to be used in a concert when the composer marks "con sordino" on your part. The intent of a performance mute is not to drastically decrease the volume, but to effect a small volume decrease while simultaneously adding a different texture to the instrument's sound. If you're looking for a mute that will keep your neighbors from calling the police when you practice the Shostakovich violin concerto at 2am, I suggest you purchase a big fat Glaesel practice mute instead: Glaesel Violin Ultra Practice Mute.
I play mostly in orchestras and chamber groups these days, and I can honestly say that as a performance mute, this item works wonderfully. I spent a lot of time trying out various mutes, but I was never happy with them. The rubber Tourte mutes that are so ubiquitous would rattle when sitting on my strings, and they were always getting ripped off when I placed my violin in its silk bag so I was always removing them after a performance and occasionally forgetting to put them on before the next performance...oops! The metal & plastic tubing Glaesel mute could stay on my strings permanently, but I found that with heavy use the metal gripping mechanism ended up wearing down the strings...really, you should never have metal squeezing your strings, it can wear out the windings.
This mute sits on my violin at all times, and the rubber is soft enough not to deform the A and D strings with the constant pressure it puts on them in order to stay in place. Best of all, it is easy to slide on and slide off even when you have only a few beats rest!
I knocked my rating down to 4 stars only because the color is not copper, it's brown...ugly rubber brown. I am used to my mutes being black, and I really don't know why Super Sensitive decided to make their mute brown. Super-Sensitive finally came out with a black version, but it's only available through their website (as of now) and I'm not paying $9 + S/H for a tiny piece of rubber just because it's black!

These are quality strings at a great price. If you're a beginner, watch a youtube video to help you change them. (A helpful hint: don't take all the strings off at one time.) D'Addario Helicore 4/4 Size Violin Strings, 4/4 Size Set with Wound E String Review

D'Addario Helicore 4/4 Size Violin Strings, 4/4 Size Set with Wound E String
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I play fiddle (New England style to be more percise), and these are my favorites. A nice bright and pleasant sound, quick response, and stays in tune very well. Spending a few extra dollars for the wound E is definetly worth it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: D'Addario Helicore 4/4 Size Violin Strings, 4/4 Size Set with Wound E String

D'Addario's Helicore strings are justifiably popular; they offer a warm, rich sound that's remarkably similar to gut or synthetic core strings. Unlike gut, however, their all-metal construction renders them impervious to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Helicore strings have a multi-strand high-carbon steel core that produces flexible response and range. The core is overlaid with exotic alloy windings that provide extremely quick bow response and outstanding projection. The end result is a versatile string with very long playing life that is extremely stable under all playing conditions.

Heavy Brass Practice Mute for Violin and Small Viola Review

Heavy Brass Practice Mute for Violin and Small Viola
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried few different mutes. This one provides maximum muting effect making playing barely audible. Perfect for playing without disturbing others. This being said there are 2 problems. The mute has its bridge grooves cut too tightly, and does not fit well on 2 of the bridges I tried it on - one being a cheap no-name, the other being Aubert Lux model. The mute goes only a few millimeters down and although works well, the fit is insecure and the weight shift may potentially damage bridge edges. I believe the mute could be improved by cutting the groves wider. The other problem is that the mute kills 99% of tonal color, so it's use is limited to practicing finger positions but not the actual clarity of played music. Since there are few manufacturers of this mute type, perhaps I need to try to obtain another one from a different vendor...

Anton Breton VP-50 4/4 Violin Mute Review

Anton Breton VP-50 4/4 Violin Mute
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When my wife and I moved into a smaller house the ability to practice the violin became severally hampered. She may be fond of the instrument, however the same song played four hundred times over and over again can get on just about anyones nerves. Things were getting bad enough that we were seriously considering purchasing an electric violin for practice just so she would not have to listen to everything I played. I had heard of mutes in the past but never considered them a viable option, seemed like their would be no way to mute a violin without interfering without significantly interfering with the tone. I was proven wrong and this little gym works wonders by reducing the vibration of the bridge and making it quite enough that now I only have to be in the next room, not the next house over.
This is a must have for anyone wishing to practice and not interested in letting everyone in the house listen to your pre-performance. Additionally, now that I know how this piece works I would recommend a person choose a heavy metal silencer over the rubber options when looking for extreme muting.

The Original Peg Drops by Ardsley Review

The Original Peg Drops by Ardsley
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Original Peg Drops by Ardsley because I practice violin every day at
least twice a day. I wore out the pegs on my student violin with frequent change
of strings that wore out, so I felt the peg drops would be a good investment for
the care of my new orchesta violin.
What I like the best about the drops is while my new violin is "settling" there isn't
a wood on wood grinding noise while tuning, and the drops aren't like a glue.
I hope this is helpful.

Glaesel Violin Ultra Practice Mute Review

Glaesel Violin Ultra Practice Mute
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a beginner, and this mute seems to do a fine job in decreasing the volume of my mistakes :) It is very easy to use. The material is firm but very soft so I do not have to worry about damaging the bridge ( I was a bit apprehensive about using a nickel or gold plated mute). The mute fits very well on a 4/4 violin and does will not fall off even if you shake the instrument upside down (not sure why anyone would but isn't it nice to know?). Since it seems over-sized I am sure it would fit on any smaller violin as well.
I only wish it would mute to an even lower volume.
