The bow is, of course, important to the sound and I have to say that even though this bow is inexpensive, as an upgrade from my standard issue student fiberglass cheap bow it is 20x the sound quality for 1.5x the price.
Handles nicely, and is probably pretty tough ( I play with a lot of rock bands so this is handy when traveling )
If you are broke but care about your sound, try it fo sho.

(More customer reviews)My son's main bow needed a repair and would be out for 2 weeks and decided to purchase this bow instead of cheap loaner bow from the shop. You can tell this bow will last long time and highly reliable. Built with patented Carbon Graphite material, this bow feel very solid but not heavy. It just feels right. My son'e original bow is $450 bow. My son like the black color on this bow. He also said that bow's hair "sticks" better then his original bow. His cello teacher always corrects him to control the bow so that bow doesn't 'slide down' the strings. So, this 'sticking' is better for my son. As for the sound, it is not as ood as the more expensive bow but it is very close. This bow also have very good playability.
My son also had Preston carbon-graphite bow but this Glasser X-series is much better over all.
** This same bow, Glasser X-series model 4000x44, I paid "ONLY" $52.10 with free shipping from Amazon. I thought this was a mistake. I am not sure how Amazon's price for this bow is so low. Lowest you can find from others are $140 plus shipping.
This was a steal!! Great & reliable bow at amazing price. I would HIHGLY recommend this bow from Amazon to young students.

Strauss Brazilwood Student Violin Bow, half-line, 1/2 Review

(More customer reviews)Since I am the first person to give a review I want everyone to know that I am purely a newbie to the violin. Please be kind to me for I am quite ignorant. If anybody out there has any advice it would be mucho appreciated.
I started playing 4 months ago and I started out with a loaner bow. I had to give the bow back so here I was trying to learn about bows while trying to reach decision to buy a bow. The budget gave out.
When I took it out of the box I noticed that it wasnt very "bowed". The stick was fairly straight. Unlike my loaner bow which was very bowed/concave when loosend. Immediately I noticed a difference in the sound and as I begain to play the stick vibrated. It vibrated to the point that I literally lost control and the bow flew from my hand.
I was very disapointed. So I began my quest for information. I took the bow to a musician and he had the same problem. I rosined, played, then I wiped the rosin and started from scratch. I rosin then played increasing the amount but never got a decent sound. Scatchy, dull, lifeless sound along with the vibration of the stick that made it almost impossible to play celitic music without losing the bow.
I adjusted the tension and only when the tension was soo much so that the stick bowed upward did it seem to "die down" and not vibrate or jump off the strings so bad. I had over an inch space between the strings and the stick. I was told that 1/4 in is sufficient enough for a good quality bow.
I also read on the internet that when loosened, the strings should be uniform. I noticed that the strings hung differently. I took a credit card and ran it down the strings and they were crossed. I read that this is poor quality workmanship.
They call this a student bow. I cannot believe that any student could learn on this bow. I will tell you that I did not contact the vendor of this bow. I was told repeatedly by many people to purchase a pernambuca bow. So I did instead of trying to get an exchange. I suppose it could be a fluke and they actually produce an affordable product that someone can play. I learned from this and I am sharing what I learned. Save yourself the $20 and spend atleast $80 more dollars and get a pernambuca.
I was so frustrated thinking that it was my technique. I realized 3 days ago when my new bow arrive, that it was not my technique.

My only complaint is Musician's Friend's shipping department almost killed it- it was loose inside a very large box. It's just lucky that it wasn't damaged. Ordinarily they are an excellent vendor, so hopefully this was just a bad day for the shipping dept. The bow itself is an excellent value and gets a big thumbs-up.
Don't use the usual junky old box rosin; spend a few bucks more on a good-quality cake rosin.

So this arrives. I'm shocked. I shrug my shoulders an attach it to the front anyway. Immediately after cast off my ship sunk into my back yard. My dog had been on board at the time. This product is great for killing your dog on a ship. It's also a great violin bow.

Londoner Bows Three Star Violin Bow, Octagonal Review

(More customer reviews)In my search for a quality bow for my daughters new violin I purchased this bow to test. It did surprisingly well. My budget was under $500 (which has changed after these trials).
Testers were my daughter (novice) and our violin teacher (expert). The violin teacher also compared them to her $2500 bow. These didn't even come close to her bow.
Bows in the trial (Ranked in the order of preference):
(We used Pirazzi rosin on an unmarked German violin)
1st: Londoner Three Star Pernambuco Bow (about $330) 60g
2nd: CodaBow Diamond NX (about $355) 62g
3rd: Arcos Brasil Pernambuco Nickel Mount bow (3 different makers) (about $400-450) 61-62g
4th: CodaBow Prodigy (about $265) 62g
5th: Arcos Brasil Carbon Fiber Braided (about $180-225)
6th: Arcos Brasil Carbon Fiber non-braided (about $140-180)
Our current bow is a Brazilwood Leon Glasser? bow (sorry stamp is worn down, can only read LEON GLAS--- stamp).
We were looking for a well balanced bow with good feel and better sound than the existing Glasser bow. Unfortunately none of the bows exceeded the Glasser bow's sound quality however the Londoner 3 star and the Codabow Diamond NX did at least match the sound. Both the Londoner and the Coda NX was almost the same as the Glasser bow and the violin teacher couldn't choose between the three (Londoner, Coda NX and Glasser). All others (Arcos Brasil, Codabow Prodigy) were losers to the Glasser.
The Londoner had the best feel and balance. The Coda NX was slightly off balance. Both have are about equal in sound.
The Arcos Brasil bows had good feel but didn't match the sound. However there was an Arcos bow that did not have good feel and lesser sound.
The Codabows won the Carbon Fiber bows contest with the Diamond series outshining many including the Prodigy, as it should. The Arcos Carbon Fibers were the worst in this group but not terrible.
If we had a lesser bow, we would have stuck with the Londoner. Instead, I'll have to change my budget to hopefully find some better options.
A word of advise, always trial the bow you plan on buying (or buy from a site/store with a generous return policy). Its been a great service and really helps compare what you have to what you're buying.
At this point, I'm going to go test the Codabow Diamond GX and Joule. Based on the NX's performance, I'm expecting them to be much better (but at a cost).
Hope this helps someone with their difficult task in finding the perfect bow!

Bow-Right for Violin, Medium (1/2-1/4 Violin) Review

I used this on both my kids and it worked for both of them. I did previously try the pencils, the straws and even pipe cleaners.
The problem with those other alternatives:
The straws BEND and fall out, and the pencils are so rigid they do not fit into the f-holes properly AND they can damage the f-hole shape. The bowright's 2 wires provide a STRAIGHT, sturdy PATH for the bow to follow. That is what is missing in those other alternatives.
Some bonuses that I realized as well were the following:
Quicker, closer to the strings, bow circles for songs like Allegro and others where you pick up the bow and start at the frog again. A sound-sensitive way of learning to keep the bow straight. When my kids would hear the ticking of the metal from their bows hitting it, they reacted instantaneously with better bowing until there was no sound.
In addition, I used this size on my younger child's 1/8 violin and it fit fine. My older child has a 1/2 violin.
So BRAVO for the Bowright, I love what it did for my kids and highly recommend it.

The quality isn't anything to write home about, but as the saying goes, a good musician can make almost any instrument sound good. I have owned bows ranging in price from this one to several thousand dollars. As I am no longer playing professionally, it made more sense to get a good value and I am not at all disappointed with my purchase.
If you're a professional violinist, this is not the product for you, but I would trust this seller as they provided exactly what I was looking for. Beginners and violin enthusiasts will be pleased with this item. The reason I gave this 4 stars is that the hair on the bow was in decent condition, which was a happy surprise.
