Intellitouch CT1 Capo Tuner, Silver Review

Intellitouch CT1 Capo Tuner, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just received one of these as a gift. Very impressed!
The tuner clamps quickly and easily onto the headstock of your instrument. The articulated mount allows you to easily maneuver the display for easy viewing. Pluck a string, and the readout shows you the closest note - and uses a simple system of arrows to show you if you're spot on or just close. Comes with a nice little protective sleeve and fits easily into the accessory box of most instrument cases.
Caution: the instructions that come with the tuner are poorly written and needlessly confusing. Suggestion: unless you need to tune off-pitch for some reason, simply do the self-test as described, just to make sure it's working properly, then clamp on, set it for the A440 mode and tune away. Takes only moments, the tune is highly accurate.

Line 6 GuitarPort XT Review

Line 6 GuitarPort XT
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Guitar Port from Amazon the other day, and when it arrived I was excited to see what my Les Paul would sound like though my computer. My old amp fried out a couple of years ago, and I have only been playing acoustic since. I was afraid that it might sound a little artificial. Boy was I wrong!
After only a few hours of use, I can tell you that this is going to reinvigorate my play. This product is much, much better than I though it could ever be. It sounds great! The ability to pick from 10 heads, 10 cabinets, and several effects allows you to create the exact tone needed for a given song. I have already saved 5 "tones". I can just pick from a list to grab a nice tube "warm" amp, to the heavy crunch I save for Metallica licks, to a sweet chorus with a bit of distortion for a number of rockers.
I also love the hum reducer which learns from your guitar, and removes almost all of the guitar hum. Between that and the noise gate, my guitar seems much cleaner than I have ever heard it.
A small but very nice feature is the tuner, which makes it pretty dead simple to tune your axe. There are a number of other features I have not used yet. You can play along with Mp3, CD, etc.
A previous reviewer mentioned that the online service is a rip-off and you have to watch "the fine print". I bought this product as an amp replacement, so I have not subscribed to the online service. You do not have to pay the online $10/month fee to use this product. All the cool stuff that I have mentioned is yours, forever.
All in all, this is the coolest guitar toy I have ever used, far better than any of the pre-amp pedals/effects that I have tried out over the years.

Crystalcello MC500 Oil Varnished Flamed 4/4 Size Orchestra Cello with Lightweight Case + Padded Bag + Bow + Accessories Review

Crystalcello MC500 Oil Varnished Flamed 4/4 Size Orchestra Cello with Lightweight Case + Padded Bag + Bow + Accessories
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty good cello for the price, but it requires a bit of attention from the buyer before it's really playable. The cello arrives, as advertised, with the strings slack and the bridge un-installed -- and rightly so, it shouldn't ship under tension. Putting the bridge up is covered, well enough, in the enclosed instructions.
But, before you do that, the fingerboard and nut (the little block at the top end of the strings) can really use some final finish work. As is understandable in such an inexpensive cello, the finish work has been done quite hastily and is a bit ragged. But, it's a simple matter to get the scratch marks out of the fingerboard and nut with some sandpaper of progressively finer grits -- sanding *with* the grain! Fortunately, these two parts don't have varnish on them, so you can sand them up nicely without having to refinish anything.
That will help with the cosmetics of the cello, but it also needed some help with the playability. As with any stringed instrument, how easy it is to play varies with how high the "action" is -- the distance between the strings and the neck. If the strings are too high, it takes a lot of effort to push them down to the neck, and gets tiring and painful for the player (especially if she's only 12). The default action on this cello (and, probably, all inexpensive cellos) is way too high, and MUST be adjusted before this is a usable instrument.
This will require a tiny file to deepen the notches in the nut that the strings ride in, until the bottom of each string is about 1/32" from the fingerboard just in front of the nut. I've been playing guitar for 30 years and have encountered this issue many times before, so I had the tools to, and no qualms about, doing this myself. If you're unable to do it yourself, you will have to find someone who can, or you will be unhappy with the playability of the cello. After the notches are deep enough, the nut should be filed down so that the strings are only half-way in the notches, and half-showing above the wood -- the strings should not be buried in what will probably be very deep notches once they're properly cut.
After the nut is right, you'll probably also have to deepen the notches on the bridge, too. Install the bridge and tighten the strings up to the proper pitch (or close). I'm not a professional luthier, but I measured a friend's well-set-up cello, and matched the heights of each string above the lower-end of the fingerboard: C-string=12/32" (or 3/8"), G-string=10/32", D-string=8/32", A-string=5/32". The lower strings were pretty close already, but the highest string needed to go down quite a bit. Especially since it's the one that's played "way up the neck" the most, its action is important.
Again the strings shouldn't be "buried" in the notches, so you'll have to sand or file the bridge until the notches are tiny nicks again. This is tougher, because you can't just flatten the top of the bridge -- it was, and should stay a "knife edge", so you have to sand the side of the bridge until it tapers up to the new notches' depths. (But notice that the bridge is flat on one side, and the taper is only on the "front". Don't sand the flat side.) Again, if you're uncomfortable doing this yourself, find someone who can. I don't think it necessarily has to be a professional luthier (though that's the safest route), but someone who's used to working with wood. It's not rocket science, but it does require some care.
Also, the strings that come with these cellos aren't very good. It was certainly playable, but we replaced them with a known-brand set, and it sounds noticeably better. The old ones are in the case, though, for emergency replacements.
One more thing -- while I had the strings off, I noticed that the tuning pegs would turn easily for a quarter-turn, then get tight, then easy again. This turned out to be caused by the pegs themselves being undetectably not-quite round -- probably (and understandably) caused by the weather difference between China and Southern California. It was causing the cello to be tricky to tune, because of the non-even force required to turn the pegs.
I fixed the problem by removing each peg and sanding the part that rides inside the hole, causing a "matte finish". Then I tightly re-inserted the peg, and turned it. When removed again, I could see where the peg was tight by where the matte finish had been burnished shiny. I sanded the shiny parts, and did it again. Eventually, each peg would burnish all the way around, and also turn smoothly and consistently.
If you've read this far, you're probably thinking that this is a "no good" cello. But I actually feel that it only suffers from some understandably hasty manufacturing, and that with a little extra attention, has become a quite good cello. I feel that, at the "price" of X dollars, a few hours of my time, and a new set of strings, it's a terrific cello. If you're expecting Ready-to-Play out of the box, you won't get it at this price -- but if you're willing to touch it up a little, or have someone else do it, it's a very good "deal". Other than the details I tweaked, the main part of the cello is well made (though the varnish is a little thick), the wood is pretty, and the staining is a nice deep red-brown (we don't like the usual "orange" finishes).
By the way, the company was great to deal with, too. They "upgraded" the cello from the described "alloy tailpiece" to an real ebony one. That's probably a welcome free upgrade for most people, but I actually prefer the alloy tailpiece because it has "designed in" fine tuners, where the ebony tailpiece has those atrocious kludged-on ones. I emailed them and they immediately sent an alloy tailpiece -- we had it two days later.

DigiTech RP250 Multi Effect Pedal Review

DigiTech RP250 Multi Effect Pedal
Average Reviews:

Lots of effects can be had with this versatile pedal, which is also easy on the budget. I'm still checking the features out. I find the settings are pushing me to play in certain directions hitherto unexplored. Very cool. The drum beats also try hard to provide variety, and yet, they remain mechanical, acting almost like a pendulum, keeping me on the beat. Good stuff for practice and for working leads around the rhythm. I still have a long way to go before the novelty of this nice piece of engineering wears off.

Lotus Light by Lotus Design: Rechargeable 9 LED Music Stand Light Review

Lotus Light by Lotus Design: Rechargeable 9 LED Music Stand Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This light, by Lotus Design has been updated and now has 17 LED's instead of 9 in the same form factor. See it at [...].
I was looking for a rechargeable battery powered music stand light. At age 45, my eyes have begun to need more light (in addition to my reading glasses) in order to see printed music clearly. I've seen and tried several different portable designs. What I like about this one is that it uses a Lithium Ion battery so you can recharge it at any time without worrying about first fully discharging it. Also, it reaches a full charge in about 2 hours yet lasts at medium power (with NO dimming and ample brightness) for 5 hours - plenty for even the longest overtime gig. In a pinch, it can also run directly off the included AC adapter.
The 17 super-bright LED's provide plenty of bright white light to cover 2 pages across a stand and even 3 pages can be lit adequately.
The only thing I'm not crazy about is the exposed IC board holding the LED's inside the shade. It seems that a lens or diffuser of some sort would provide some protection for this. I haven't had it for very long but I anticipate that the unit will need to be carefully packed inside my gig bag when not in use or this part of the unit could become damaged.
Some nice features of this unit are that: it includes a 10" gooseneck that allows you to adjust the light to any position you might need on a music stand; the base unit has LED's to indicate that the unit is charging or that it has reached a full charge; it includes a lightweight carry bag for the unit. When you remove the stand clip, the entire unit can be made flat for storage inside the bag. Finally, the light is a bit costly. I found it for $99 including shipping. This might seem steep at first, but some other rechargeable LED lights out there run $40 - $60 and do not include the rechargeable batteries nor the A/C adapter. This is the nicest package in this category of light that I have found.
Update: After using this light for a year now, my concerns about it holding up have proven to be unfounded. The light works great and has held up perfectly. It's the brightest, whitest light on the bandstand at every gig and everybody that see it wants to get one for themselves. I'm very happy with my light!

LEDs don't get hot and will never need replacing. The flexible arm directs the light exactly where you need it and its slim profile won't obstruct your view. Pirastro Evah Pirazzi up to 16.5" Viola String Set - Medium Gauge Review

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi up to 16.5 Viola String Set - Medium Gauge

Unlike the Evah Pirazzi violin strings, the windings are even and don't interfere with insertion into the tailpiece. The strings produce a warm yet clear tone that performs well both in small ensembles and in orchestra use. The break-in period is reasonable and the strings remain stable much longer than Obbligato. I find them excellent overall for full-time professional use.

I am surprised that this is the first review for GPO on Amazon, considering the growing following this collection has.
This is one impressive product - a comprehensive list of sounds, that work very well together. Obviously the samples in more expensive packages are more impressive in their basic sound, but if used with skill it is truly astonishing what can be achieved with this set - one has only to listen to the numerous user demos on their web site to see for yourself. The situation here is that the sum is in fact greater than its parts.
In this price range, there really isn't anything that can compare to it. The quality of the results achievable are good enough for professional use, and in fact it is getting considerable professional application in many different areas.
Anyone looking for orchestral sounds, but unwilling (or more likely unable) to the spend the thousands necessary for the big libraries should take a look at what is being offered here.

Overall, I am pleased with my new cello, because it came with strings, end pin protector, cello rosin, cello cover, and French bow. I was surprised I did not find any packaged extra strings. I was also surprised to see that some hair came out from the bow very easily, which almost led me to believe that this bow needed re-hairing. It seems that this instrument can produce a good resonating forward sound, which at times have to control by backing the note dynamics off. I was not able to find a logo indicating where this cello was originally made at. The bridge was slightly too high. Because my original plan was to use the instrument in my church only and not professionally, this full-size instrument works very well with me. Thank you!

This pedal is great. The Sustain knob (controls dist./sust.) has a wide range of choices. You want a great 70's dist. or a bit more heavy? Just adjust the knob! AWESOME and very smooth sustain, and the tone is killer from this pedal. I only had to tweak the knobs a bit before I had "that" feeling iin the back of my neck. The one that says, "That's it right there!"
The size of this pedal is nice too, it's a bit wider than say a BOSS, but it doesn't take up too much room. The box is pretty sturdy, it will take some abuse!
Alone or with a few effects, this is a great pedal

This viola is decent for an orchestra student. The strings and bridge are not very durable/strong, after a tuning one bridge cracked, and after a few months of use one string is starting to "peel" The bow itself had many loose hairs (when tightened) when it arrived, and weekly, some strings start to easily fall out. Another con is that the bridge is not cut, so you'll need to send it into a string shop to do so for around $30-$40. Overall it does produce a nice sound and is good for maybe a High School string student.

TC-Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G XT Vocal Effects Processor Review

TC-Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G XT Vocal Effects Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Much simpler to use than its big daddy, the VoiceLive2--but it's missing one crucial thing: the dedicated jack for the expression pedal to turn the harmonies on and off in live situations. If you use it sparingly, it's an instrument unto itself, and with the latching footswitch, you end up playing Riverdance on it. Also: in a band situation, it's very very sensitive to outside noise into your vocal mic. You need a completely polarizing hypercardioid, and you'll need to point the other amps away from it. In a crowded cavern-type gig? Forget it. It'll squeal on you.
Perfect for acoustic gigs where you don't run signal interference. Just a beautiful invention. Next time, TC Helicon, give us that expression pedal jack, and you'll have the best performance pedal in the business.
