Hofner Icon Club Bass - Vintage Sunburst Review

Hofner Icon Club Bass - Vintage Sunburst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll qualify my remarks by noting I've been playing bass over 40 years. I own, and have played, good stuff, and stuff that looks better than it plays. This Hofner Club Bass (C-Bass, C-Series), made in Indonesia, is designed as a vintage guitar, and achieves that look and feel completely. It is short-scale, with a body the same size and dimensions as a Les Paul. It is finished caringly, and the woodgrain in both the spruce and maple is handsome. The gloss (lacquer?) finish is flawless. There is no neck binding. The pickguard is nicely executed in a too-white pearloid-look plastic, which does not detract aesthetically. The sunburst coloration has an accurate '50s/'60s vintage look. The volume knobs are tiny and crappy, and I replaced them. The rosewood fingerboard has a high-quality finish and look to it. I replaced the factory roundwound strings with Labella Beatle Bass Flatwounds, and the hollow (I don't believe there's a sustain block) body with flatwounds yields the bottomy, woody sound you'd expect. The guitar has a quite broad tonal range, and unconventional switches. It very comfortable on the knee or over the shoulder. It DOES feel extremely light, and one is tempted to say, CHEAP, as a result. However, it plays great right out of the box (no set-up), has great tone, is effortless to sling for 3 hours, and you don't see them around, either in Indonesian, Chinese (Contemporary $700) or German ($2000+) iterations. The "cool" factor is big, and the price makes it a no-brainer as a second or back-up bass.

High Gloss Mandolin Review

High Gloss Mandolin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a guitar player for 20 years and decided to pick up this "blowout sale" mandolin to see if I liked the instrument, figuring I would get a better one if I did. Unfortunately, the neck of the mandolin I received is badly bowed, and there is no truss rod or any other mechanism to adjust it. As a result, the strings sit almost 1/4" above the tiny little fretboard, making it impossible to play. I was not expecting a lot from this "bargain", but I was certainly hoping that it would be usable to a certain extent.

Guitar Players - to start on mandolin after playing guitar for years...this is a natural transition considering the mechanics on guitar are very similar to mandolin: 1. Both are played with a flatpick...2. Both are fretted instruments...3. Both are chordal instruments...4. Both require a knowledge of the very same music fundamentals. Violin Players - you won't have to relearn the fingerboard language...the mandolin is essentially a violin handled with a different medium...yes, due to the picking hand, as opposed to the bowing hand, there are some new mechanics to learn...even so, it would be quite a bit easier transition for a violinist to pick up the mandolin over and above any other fretted instrument...additionally, due to the bowing mechanics, a mandolinist usually has a harder time transitioning to the the violin.

Alfred Celtic Woman Songbook Review

Alfred Celtic Woman Songbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are a fan of Celtic Woman, then this songbook is for you. My personal favorite out of this collection is "Caledonia". The book includes the piano accompaniment, violin markings, and the lyrics. It is actually a very nicely done sheet music collection. It is missing some of the hits of the later Celtic Woman cds such as "The Spanish Lady". And the accompaniment isn't beginner level. Which actually I was glad for. But I do want to let people know, that beginner pianists might have some difficulty with the level of the accompaniment. Since I was a huge fan of Celtic Woman when I was little, this book serves as a nostalgic piece for me. As I've since gotten more interested in Classical music. However, I do recommend this collection of sheet music. And I think it will allow one to explore music for a long time through their songs.

Crown Sound Grabber II PZM Condenser Microphone (Standard) Review

Crown Sound Grabber II PZM Condenser Microphone (Standard)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The PZM type microphones are specialized, and only work well when placed on a flat surface (preferably 4+ feet in radius) such as a floor or table. It is low, unobtrusive, and omni-directional -- which means it is good for picking up sounds in all directions.
* The Sound Grabber II has a somewhat restricted frequency response, making it more suitable for voices than for instrumental recording.
* It has good clarity, and the PZM design helps it reject some types of unwanted ambient sounds.
* It is priced very cheaply compared to other PZM microphones, and it comes with it's own power (unlike the more professional models which require "phantom-sound").
I use it in stage applications, where it does a nice job of picking up the _too_ quiet voices of our elementary school actors.
----
I to wanted comment on the review by "A. W. Teacher", because it sounds like they had the microphone incorrectly placed (mounted on or near a video camera from what I can infer). If the kids were sitting around a table and the microphone had been placed in the middle of the table - than it would have worked great (guessing that was why it was recommended by the National Board Certification).
It is about the worst type of microphone to mount on (or near) a video camera for two reasons: (1) the need to be on a flat surface, and (2) the omni-directional pickup gets noises from behind the camera (something you rarely want). If you are looking for a video camera microphone, you will find the "cardioid" family of microphones works much better!
Crown actually has a nice reference site, with many suggestions on choosing the appropriate microphone for any particular situation: [...]

eNote Nano Chromatic Clip-On Musical Instrument Tuner Review

eNote Nano Chromatic Clip-On Musical Instrument Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
this tuner seems to be a little touchy and inconsistent as far as quick accurate tuning is concerned. this is in terms of when the green display lights up instead of the red. the green lights up when you're in the neighborhood, not just when you are Right On the note. i would prefer it were more discriminating about when it gives you "the green light". but it is an inexpensive tuner, so maybe it's just the "you get what you pay for" maxim. if i had it to do over again, i would probably keep looking ...
